Science Journal: Future of Cancer Treatment - Immunotherapy

Abstract:
Cancer remains one of the most significant global treatment challenges. Annually, approximately 20 million people around the world are newly diagnosed with cancer while around 10 million die of the disease. The conventional approaches – surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy – are generally accessible, though such measures are fraught with disadvantages such as toxicity, chance of recurrence and damage to normal healthy tissues. Such considerations have led researchers to attempt finding alternative approaches to cancer treatment. One such treatment that has shown great promise is called immunotherapy and this involves harnessing the innate ability of the body to destroy tumor cells. According to new evidence, methods of immunotherapy such as monoclonal antibodies, CAR-T cell therapy, vaccines against cancer and checkpoint inhibitors are very useful primarily in hematological malignancies. In contrast, solid tumors prove a much greater difficulty. Further studies are necessary to develop these therapies and make them increasingly effective.
